Meet Robert

Robert LeVertis Bell is a longtime community activist, father, and public school teacher running to represent District 43 of the Kentucky House of Representatives. A Louisville native and a democratic socialist, Bell is running because Kentucky needs strong progressive advocates for its working class in the state government.

Bell grew up in West Louisville and, from a very early age, learned the importance of community organizing, stuffing envelopes and walking picket lines with his grandmother, community activist Mattie Jones, and legendary Louisville organizers, such as Anne Braden and Rev. Louis Coleman. By the time he was a teen, Robert’s community activism had begun to take its own shape. He was involved in Brat Magazine and was the founding vice-president of the BRYCC House, an arts and activism community center that served Louisville’s youth and music cultures. As a young adult, he organized actively against racists and fascist groups throughout the South and Midwest. Robert would go on to be involved in many local organizations over the decades including Citizens Against Police Abuse and the Democratic Socialists of America.

A middle school English teacher at an underserved Jefferson County Public school, Bell is a proud union member who is extremely aware of the ways in which our government has failed its most marginalized constituents.  In addition, he has been very active in the Shelby Park neighborhood, and served as the vice-president of the Shelby Park Neighborhood Association for three years.

Robert is here to continue building a movement for change and is ready to transform the state of Kentucky into one that works for its working class.  He is committed to remaining an active and visible community presence, organizing for change in Louisville and beyond.
