Robert’s Story

Robert grew up in West Louisville and, from a very early age, learned the importance of community organizing, stuffing envelopes and walking picket lines with his grandmother, community activist Mattie Jones, and legendary Louisville organizers, such as Anne Braden and Rev. Louis Coleman. By the time he was a teen, Robert’s community activism had begun to take its own shape. He was involved in Brat Magazine and was the founding vice-president of the BRYCC House, an arts and activism community center that served Louisville’s youth and music cultures. As a young adult, he organized actively against racist and fascist groups throughout the South and Midwest. Robert would go on to be involved in many local organizations over the decades including Citizens Against Police Abuse and the Democratic Socialists of America.

Where Robert stands

What do we do when we feel like we’re going backwards? We organize for change.

Robert realizes that the first step to building a Kentucky that works for everyone is to build a base for change throughout the commonwealth. Part of this entails uniting working people around demands and policies that will make us all healthier, safer, and more financially secure. We need stronger labor protections, good jobs, timely interventions in the housing crisis, to defend and expand our public education infrastructure, and to confront institutionalized bigotry. And we desperately need a Green New Deal for Kentucky. Robert will fight for a wide range of policy solutions to beat back corporate and right-wing power and to win sustainable gains for Kentucky’s working families.
